About Peeta
Peeta Tinay grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was born into a family of creatives: her father a chemist by day and a jeweler by night, her mother a dietitian and watercolor painter. Her grandfather was an inventor, keeping a fully functional foundry and pattern shop behind the family home. This early creative environment was fertile ground through which she came of age and discovered her life’s work.
From 1990 to 2000 at The Caning Shop in Berkeley California she was introduced and grew competent in techniques involved in the restoration of wicker furniture. Starting in 2008 she veered hard into making large scale intricate baskets. Peeta teaches beginning and intermediate level basketry workshops both nationally and internationally. She shows her work at juried craft shows in the San Francisco Bay Area and is on the exhibit committee board of The National Basketry Organization.

Workshop Details
During this basketry workshop students will make 2 baskets using round reed. These are challenging and rewarding projects for students who want to dive deep and refine their weaving techniques and skills.
All basketry materials are prepared for students prior to the 5-day workshop. This allows for ease, flow and successfully finished baskets by the close of our time together. A multiple page handout will be provided for students to keep. Ample one-on-one instruction will be provided during the workshop.
Please contact Peeta directly with any questions- peeta@tinaystudio.com
Skill Level: Suitable for intermediate level basket weavers with a good understanding of twining.
Please note these will be full 8-hour days of weaving and instruction at a minimum.
Hand strength and stamina are required for this 5 day workshop.
During the workshop, discussions include: round reed materials preparation, materials dyeing, methods for creating basket shape, tension on materials, hand and body placement while weaving, suppliers of materials and tools, finishing process and more.
Student Outline for the Weaving Days:
Day 1 - Starting day 1 of the workshop, we will look over the round reed sample baskets that are the teaching tools to work from. Students will determine colors and create twined spiral basket base. The base spokes and side spokes for this basket will be brown. The side weaving material will be black for contrast.
The finished size of the first basket will be approximately 15” diameter by 4” tall.
Peeta will demonstrate how the split spoke twined basket base starts. Students will learn the importance of tension on the weaving materials with finger, hand, and body positions. The spacing of the base spokes, keeping them on the same plane and why a basket base needs a dome will be the focus of topics covered and much more during day 1.
The goal for day 1 is to complete the weaving of the basket base.
Day 2 - Day 2 will be spent inserting the 78 side spokes, weaving the side of the basket and creating a border. Students will learn about creating and maintaining basket shape. Students will be encouraged to do any finish up on this first project in the evening, so we are all set to start the second basket project in the morning.
Day 3 - Students will build upon their skills and start the second basketry project. This basket base will use the same twining techniques as the first project. There will be options to create a base with different colors and a slightly different pattern. The base spokes and side spokes for this basket will be black. The side weaving material will be brown to contrast with the black spokes.
The goal by the end of day 3 is to have the basket base woven. The approximate size of this basket will be 18” diameter by 5” tall.
Day 4 - Students will move on to inserting side spokes and weaving the side of the basket. This basket will have double the amount of side spokes, 156, compared to the first project. Students will then move onto weaving the side of the basket. The goal by the end of day 4 is to have the basket ready to start the Ring Border in the morning.
Day 5 - Students will finish off the basket with a Ring Border. If time allows, we will add the lattice overlay. This will be at the discretion of Peeta.
Final trimming, touch up and applying the waxed cotton cord for hanging will bring our workshop to completion.
