Workshop: Unique Nantuckets

Dates: September 22 - 28, 2025

  • About Kathy

Kathy started her weaving journey in a local class while living in South Carolina, and she quickly fell in love with the art of Basketry. While traveling the United States as a military wife she took hundreds of weaving classes from individual teachers at many conventions and with many different guilds.

Kathy loved the creative process and quickly became a teacher. Truly enjoying assisting others to learn how to weave, teaching became her happy place. Sharing her love of traditional and contemporary basketry has become one of her favorite activities during retirement.

As a skilled weaver herself she has and Kathy's Websitecontinues to exhibit her works in shows across the United States, in both group and juried art exhibits. She also teaches at Guilds and Conferences across the country.

  • Workshop Details

Students will first weave a 10” Nantucket Tray using hardwood staves and natural cane following traditional techniques. After learning these traditional techniques Kathy will inspire her students to complete new and unique designs.

Students will choose a minimum of 3 additional projects after the tray is completed. Kathy will demonstrate the methods she uses to select different materials and add different designs and rims. She will also discuss and demonstrate how to use half round for your rims. Different vessels will be used as molds. The possibilities are endless. At the end of the week each student will walk away with unique Nantuckets.

Skill Level - advanced beginner and above

    Tools- bring standard basketry tools

    Projects:

    1. Traditional 10” Nantucket Tray. The staves, rims, and base will be Cherry. The weavers are traditional 2.5mm cane. Students will learn to prep spokes, base, and rims, then position staves to weave up the sides of a rented mold. Rims will be placed on and nailed in place. Lashing with cane will complete this lovely basket. $145

    2. 6” Tapestry Nantucket. This round Nantucket will have a maple base and will be woven over a hard plastic mold. The sides will be woven with 2.5 mm Hamburg cane. Spokes are 3/16’ flat oval and once they are stable students will add in many different materials. Hand dyed yarn, waxed linen, beads and unique jewelry pieces are just a few items that will be available. Your rims will be 3/8” half round that will be molded ahead of time. $125

    3. Navy Blue and White Tote. This unique oval tote will have a hardwood base. The staves are 5mm Hamburg Binder Cane dyed navy blue. Weavers are 2.5mm Hamburg cane. The contrast creates an elegant tote. Your rims and braided handle are Navy Blue leather. The handle will be attached using Eco-Ivory knobs. The challenge here is keeping everything straight and equal using very fine materials. $175

    4. Elegant Pot Belly. This wonderful potbelly design is woven over a custom puzzle class mold. The base, rims and lid are Cherry. The weaving is Hamburg cane and waxed linen. I enjoyed designing this lovely potbelly that stands 5.5” tall and has a diameter of 4.5”. The lid has an antique brass knob. $88

    5. Large Japanese Nantucket Bowl is a new class. This beautiful 10” Japanese Bowl is woven with Hamburg cane. We will use a Nantucket technique to weave this basket. The rim is 3/8” flat oval dyed navy blue. The challenge is the shape of the bowl. The design on the bowl is a famous Japanese Block Print. The size is unique and makes a wonderful art piece. $110

    6. Nantucket style Basket with Beads. This basket is woven over a 6" hard plastic bowl with a 4” maple base attached. It starts out using traditional techniques with Hamburg cane. Halfway up the sides there is an arrow design using waxed linen. The design continues with a diagonal pattern that you will sew the beads onto after the sides are complete. New techniques will challenge you, but the result is worth it. $85
