Workshop: Ribbed Basketry with Anne

Dates: May 5-11, 2025

  • About Anne

Anne is from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia where she works in her studio designing and teaching baskets. She was a production basket maker for many years, and she brings those skills into each basket that she teaches. Ribbed basketry is her specialty, and some of her baskets have taken on a sculptural perspective in recent years. Anne has participated in many basketry exhibits and shows and has won many awards for her work. Her new book “Ribbed Basketry: Traditional to Contemporary” was published last year.

She is a member of the National Basketry Organization. She has taught on 4 basketry cruises, teaches basketry across the country and lectures about the woven form. Basketry has taken Anne to Poland for the Worldwide Wicker and Weaving Festival and to Germany for their annual basketry festival.

2025 will mark her 34th year of participation in the annual Over the Mountain Studio Tour. Her goal is to make each student’s class a successful one.

    Projects:

Course Description (include projects to be taught and techniques and skills that will be the focus of the week.):

    Little Red Potato $95, Intermediate

First in Anne’s ‘Vegetable Series”, this basket is a colorful rendition of the Appalachian Potato Basket. Woven on an oval hoop, students will use a wide variety of dyed reed, seagrass and yarn to create this colorful red basket. Students will learn how to notch initial ribs, weave a 5-point lashing; sight, whittle and insert both primary and secondary ribs, change colors and wrap the handle grips.

    Cutting Board Basket $80, Intermediate

If there ever was a useful basket, this is one! Using round reed techniques, our basket spokes will be inserted through the cutting board, which Anne will predrill for you. After weaving a ‘foot’ under the board, we will weave the sides in a variety of techniques and with colors of your choice. A rolled rim completes the basket. Basket is 9” X 12” X 4 ½” tall. Can be hung on the wall.

Double Antler Wall Basket, $130 Intermediate to Advanced

Now, here is a special basket! Each will be unique as students will have a wide variety of colors and textures of materials to choose from. Materials will include dyed round reed, felted wool roving, jute, yarn, leather, dyed seagrass, etc. The size of the basket pictured is 12” wide X 13” tall X 8” deep, but each pair of antlers will vary in size. All ribs will be drilled and inserted into antlers so you can begin to weave as soon as class starts. If you have weave-able items you want to incorporate into your basket, please bring them along! You will have the option of covering the skull with leather at the end of class.

Curly Willow Weaving $75, Intermediate to Advanced

This class will focus on free form ribbed basket weaving using curly willow as a framework and cane and reed to create one-of-a-kind baskets to grace your home. The sky is the limit as we imagine the possibilities of weaving with various shapes of sticks, dyed and natural ribs and weavers.

    Traditional Hen Basket $75, Advanced

This traditional Appalachian basket form is a tour de force of ribbed basketry. Using 3 oak hoops, students will braid a cane handgrip, then add series of ribs to achieve the unique shape of the Hen. Anne will share with you some of the history of these baskets and their usage during class as you weave.

    Watermelon Baskets $50 – 6”, $60 – 8”, $80 – 10” Intermediate to Advanced

Reminiscent of a hot summer’s day, these square ribbed baskets are fun to make. Handles feature a twill design with god’s eye lashing to hold the oak frames together. Ribs are pre-shaped to assist with shaping. 6” and 8” baskets are all primary ribs; 10” has both primary and secondary ribs. All weaving is done with reed, both dyed and natural. “Seeds” are added after the basket is complete. Sizes are 6” square, 8” square and 10” square. Note: PLEASE state the size you want to make in class and any additional kits you may desire.
